Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that is designed to save a natural tooth that has been damaged or infected. The process involves removing the infected or damaged pulp from within the tooth, and then cleaning, shaping, and filling the root canals. This treatment is typically recommended in cases where a tooth has a deep cavity, a cracked or broken tooth, or has suffered trauma. By undergoing timely root canal treatment, you can avoid the need for tooth extraction and preserve your natural tooth. This treatment provides gentle and effective relief and can help you avoid the discomfort and inconvenience of more invasive dental procedures.

Pre-Treatment Consultation

Before recommending root canal treatment, Dr. Imran will conduct a thorough examination and diagnostic tests to accurately assess the condition of your tooth and ensure that root canal therapy is the best course of action. The first test is an X-ray of the root. A percussion test, in which a tooth is hit with a dentist’s mirror, is also done. A cold test is done with a glossy cotton swab. It is done to check if the tooth is dead or not.

Procedure Overview

Root Canal Treatment Process

Before the treatment doctor may take photographs of your teeth to track the progress.

Multiple Sessions

Root canal treatment usually requires more than one appointment.

Dr. Imran will use a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth and place a sheet of rubber called a dam over your tooth to keep the area clean and dry. The next step is to drill a hole in the top of your tooth to remove the pulp and clean and disinfect the canals inside your tooth. If more than one session is needed, he will seal your tooth with a temporary filling.

When the cleaning treatment is finished in one or more appointments, Dr. Imran will fill the canal space with a sterile material called gutta-percha. To ensure complete sealing of the root canals the gutta-percha is placed with an adhesive cement. To close the opening a temporary filling is placed which will be removed before the tooth is restored.

As part of the restoration of the tooth, Dr. Imran may recommend a dental crown. This will restore the tooth’s strength and functionality, ensuring a natural-looking and long-lasting result.
